Rigorous Medical Education and Training
Dr. Cornejo’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Texas A&M University, where he distinguished himself as a scholar with a deep curiosity for human anatomy and cellular regeneration. His undergraduate research focused on tissue engineering and the molecular pathways that govern wound healing, laying a scientific foundation that would later inform his surgical innovations. Graduating with honors, he was recognized for his leadership in the pre‑medical society and for publishing two peer‑reviewed articles on biomaterials, achievements that underscored his commitment to merging rigorous scientific inquiry with clinical application.
Following his undergraduate success, Dr. Cornejo pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, a program renowned for its emphasis on both primary care and specialized surgical training. Throughout medical school, he excelled in the core rotations, earning commendations for his diagnostic acumen and empathetic patient interactions. His clinical clerkships in general surgery and orthopedics sparked an early fascination with the transformative power of surgical intervention, prompting him to seek a residency that would allow him to blend aesthetic artistry with reconstructive precision.
After earning his MD, Dr. Cornejo entered a highly competitive integrated plastic surgery residency program, where he refined his technical skills under the mentorship of nationally recognized surgeons. His residency curriculum encompassed a broad spectrum of procedures—from microsurgical free‑flap reconstruction to advanced facial rejuvenation techniques—providing him with a versatile skill set. He completed fellowships in both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, gaining specialized expertise in craniofacial reconstruction, breast reconstruction post‑mastectomy, and innovative body contouring methods. His dedication to lifelong education is evident in his ongoing participation in advanced workshops, cadaver labs, and international conferences, ensuring that his practice remains at the cutting edge of plastic surgery.
Surgical Expertise
Dr. Cornejo’s surgical repertoire is distinguished by mastery across the three pillars of plastic surgery: aesthetic enhancement, reconstructive restoration, and complex microsurgical reconstruction. In the realm of cosmetic surgery, he is celebrated for his nuanced approach to facial rejuvenation, employing a combination of minimally invasive techniques such as thread lifts, volumizing fillers, and precise laser resurfacing to achieve natural, age‑appropriate results. His expertise extends to body contouring, where he utilizes the latest advances in liposuction technology, including power‑assisted and ultrasound‑assisted methods, to sculpt patient silhouettes with unparalleled precision while minimizing postoperative downtime.
Reconstructive surgery represents a cornerstone of Dr. Cornejo’s practice, particularly in breast reconstruction following oncologic surgery. Leveraging both implant‑based and autologous tissue techniques, he tailors each reconstruction to the patient’s anatomy, oncologic considerations, and personal preferences. His proficiency in DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap procedures, coupled with a meticulous understanding of vascular anatomy, has resulted in high‑success rates and reduced donor‑site morbidity. Moreover, his dedication to comprehensive breast care includes collaborative planning with oncologists and radiation therapists, ensuring seamless integration of reconstructive timelines within the broader cancer treatment continuum.
Beyond elective cosmetic and oncologic reconstruction, Dr. Cornejo is a leading authority in complex reconstructive challenges such as traumatic injuries, congenital anomalies, and pressure‑induced defects. He employs microsurgical techniques to restore function and form, often performing free‑flap transfers that demand precise anastomosis of tiny vessels under high magnification. His innovative use of regenerative medicine—incorporating platelet‑rich plasma and stem‑cell enriched grafts—has accelerated healing and improved aesthetic outcomes in scar revision and burn reconstruction. These multifaceted capabilities underscore his reputation as a surgeon capable of navigating the most intricate surgical landscapes with confidence and compassion.
Commitment to Patient Safety
Patient safety is the linchpin of Dr. Cornejo’s practice, a principle reinforced by his active involvement in professional societies dedicated to setting and upholding the highest standards of care. As a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), he adheres to rigorous ethical guidelines, participates in continuing education programs, and contributes to the development of evidence‑based protocols that safeguard patient outcomes. His affiliation with the Texas Plastic Surgeons Association further underscores his dedication to state‑specific regulatory compliance, peer review, and community outreach initiatives aimed at educating the public on surgical safety.
