Dr. Augenstein earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where he distinguished himself as a scholar with a keen interest in surgical anatomy and patient‑centered care. Throughout his medical school tenure, he excelled in courses ranging from histology to advanced clinical rotations, consistently ranking in the top percentile of his class. His early exposure to the complexities of wound healing and tissue regeneration sparked a fascination with the plastic surgery specialty, prompting him to seek immersive research opportunities in reconstructive techniques and biomaterials. His academic rigor was complemented by leadership roles in student‑run health initiatives, where he honed communication skills essential for patient advocacy.

Following medical school, Dr. Augenstein pursued a rigorous residency in General Surgery at the University of North Carolina (UNC) from 2000 to 2005. During this five‑year program, he rotated through high‑volume trauma centers, transplant services, and oncologic surgery units, gaining a breadth of experience that fortified his technical dexterity and decision‑making under pressure. He was recognized for his adept management of complex abdominal and thoracic procedures, earning commendations for operative efficiency and postoperative outcomes. In addition to his clinical duties, he contributed to scholarly research on peri‑operative infection control, publishing peer‑reviewed articles that informed institutional protocols and reduced surgical site infection rates by a measurable margin.

Building upon his general surgery foundation, Dr. Augenstein entered a combined residency and fellowship in Plastic Surgery at UNC, spanning 2005 to 2009. This intensive training immersed him in both aesthetic and reconstructive disciplines, providing a seamless transition from foundational surgical principles to specialized microsurgical techniques. He mastered the art of free‑tissue transfer, intricate facial reconstruction, and innovative breast reconstruction methods, frequently serving as the primary surgeon for complex cases involving oncologic resections and congenital anomaly corrections. His scholarly contributions during this period included a seminal study on the long‑term viability of autologous fat grafting, which garnered national attention and influenced best‑practice guidelines. By the conclusion of his fellowship, Dr. Augenstein had amassed a diverse operative portfolio, positioning him as a versatile and highly skilled plastic surgeon ready to serve the Charlotte community.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Augenstein’s surgical repertoire spans the full spectrum of plastic surgery, encompassing both aesthetic and reconstructive modalities. In the realm of aesthetic surgery, he is renowned for his meticulous breast augmentation and reduction techniques, employing state‑of‑the‑art implants, precise pocket placement, and individualized incision planning to achieve natural, harmonious results. His approach to facial rejuvenation integrates advanced volumizing fillers, thread lifts, and precise rhinoplasty, all guided by a deep understanding of facial aesthetics and proportion. He routinely utilizes three‑dimensional imaging to simulate postoperative outcomes, allowing patients to visualize their transformation and set realistic expectations.

Reconstructive surgery forms a cornerstone of Dr. Augenstein’s practice, where his expertise in microsurgery enables him to perform complex free‑flap transfers, such as the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap for breast reconstruction following mastectomy. He has pioneered techniques that minimize donor‑site morbidity while maximizing flap viability, resulting in superior aesthetic and functional outcomes for patients recovering from cancer surgery. His proficiency extends to hand surgery, where he addresses traumatic injuries, nerve repairs, and congenital anomalies with a focus on restoring dexterity and reducing postoperative stiffness. Additionally, his work in scar revision employs laser resurfacing, subcision, and strategic excision to improve both the appearance and flexibility of problematic scars.

Beyond individual procedures, Dr. Augenstein is a leading authority in body contouring, offering comprehensive solutions for patients seeking transformative changes after massive weight loss or age‑related tissue laxity. His expertise includes abdominoplasty, thigh lifts, and comprehensive torso sculpting, all performed with a keen eye for preserving vascular supply and ensuring symmetrical results. He integrates adjunctive technologies such as radiofrequency-assisted lipolysis and high‑definition liposuction to refine contouring and enhance skin tightening. Moreover, his dedication to continuous learning drives him to adopt emerging innovations, such as stem‑cell‑enriched fat grafting and regenerative matrix applications, positioning his practice at the forefront of surgical advancement.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Dr. Augenstein’s unwavering dedication to patient safety is reflected in his active involvement with premier professional societies and his receipt of multiple prestigious awards.
